Worked on where Materials come from for our "Design a Toy" Project
Many of the Eco homes were brought in and we had an open house tour of these great examples of sustainability.
Assigned the blue print drawing in the packet to be completed. This involves drawing a map view and a portrait view.

Made From Earth - Toy Project

Today we started a unit on How Natural Resources Become the Things We Use.
We went over where resources come from, the science and vocabulary behind them.
We viewed a video put out of the resources from the California Department of Education at
http://www.storyofstuff.org/movies-all/story-of-stuff/

Students will start the Manufacturing  and Design Journal

Friday, December 30

October 26th

Looked at Early Settlers on site field trip and how Mountain Men lived off the land. Tools used to explore this new Western Frontier!

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Went over syllabus of assignments, gave a second copy. One is glued in science notebook the other loose to be placed in binder. This is also on the student portal. Today we did a hands on lab modeling the moon phases, lunar month, its movement around the earth and the effects of gravity on string, rocks and us! Students have a star chart to use to view the night sky this month and next. Help them look for the big dipper, little dipper and the summer triangle.

Trees Presentation from former Forester

Great hands on lab on Talk About Trees . Jeanne Tomascheski, is a retired forester and has many years of experience in the classroom presenting our program and teaching in local elementary schools.

It was “a forest fieldtrip” in our classroom!  The presentation reinforces the following 6th grade Ecology and Resource Science Standards:
Grade 6
Ecology (Life Sciences)
5. Organisms in ecosystems exchange energy and nutrients among themselves and with the environment. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis and then from organism to organism through food webs.
b. Students know matter is transferred over time from one organism to others in the food web and between organisms and the physical environment.
c. Students know populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem.
e. Students know the number and types of organisms an ecosystem can support depends on the resources available and on abiotic factors, such as quantities of light and water, a range of temperatures, and soil composition.

Resources (Grade 6)
6. Sources of energy and materials differ in amounts, distribution, usefulness, and the time required for their formation. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know the utility of energy sources is determined by factors that are involved in converting these sources to useful forms and the consequences of the conversion process.
b. Students know different natural energy and material resources, including air, soil, rocks, minerals, petroleum, fresh water, wildlife, and forests, and know how to classify them as renewable or nonrenewable.
c. Students know the natural origin of the materials used to make common objects.

Checked in Science Notebooks (I held onto them for grading)
We started making a model of the earth layers from crust to core!
Homework: color, cut out model Paleo-Magnetic Banding on the Sea Floor. Polar reversals.
We will assemble in class.

What a great class we had today!
We met as teams and did a magnetism pre quiz. Watched an educational video on Magnetism in Theme Parks then brainstormed use of earth science topics and magnetism for an Earth Science Theme Park.
In class we did magnetism post test, use notes to study for quiz on Friday.
Homework assignment is to please read page 50-55 and do section review questions 1-9

Friday, September 21, 2012

Read text book pages 38 - 48 and do section review questions 1-10. Please write them in your science journal. Thanks ~ Mr. Ewart

Today we introduced learning communities in our class. We have four table groups that represent Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind. Every student has a role that they play in their group. The group acts as a whole to assist each of the individuals. Groups took a practice test on chapter 1 in class and it was a very enjoyable experience as they worked as a team. The assignments were passed out today and everyone glued them inside their student notebooks and reviewed the directions. They are as follows: Chapter Summary "The Big Idea" copy the Heading and Key Concept into Science Notebook (For bonus points you can copy the bulleted points too!)   Part 2 is to do the Science Skills Activity. Read the Develop a Hypothesis then there is a section called "You Try It!" Follow the directions and record into the Science Notebook. Bring to class on Friday. Thank you ~ Mr. E

Saturday, September 8, 2012

On Friday we took Chapter 1 test. We also did a Science Notebook check. Students also spent 30 minutes on the Hands On Lab on Magnetism! They have a packet to look over and must bring on Wednesday to complete lab.

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Assignments: Do Chapter Review p 22-23 and study for test on Thursday. Yes, you may use your Science Notebook for the Chapter 1 Test. Come to class with some ideas about Earth Science Projects you would like to work on. So far we have: Model Making, Volcano, Sun - Solar Panels, Planets, Biosphere, Rockets, Dry Ice, Waves, Liquid Nitrogen...
